The 7th grade basketball team hosted the first tournament of the season on saturday. The A and B team finished the day undefeated with valuable wins under their belt. The A team once again had some real nail biters on their hands. In their first game they faced Briesemiester and for the second time this season ended up in overtime! The Unicorns took control of the game in the second quarter and maintained a small lead for much of the game. Late in the 4th Briese came storming back and tied the game at the buzzer to force OT. In overtime the Unicorns came out fast taking a quick 6 point lead and were able to hold off their opponent to win 53-51. In their second game they faced Canyon. Once again the Unicorns took control of the game and maintained a lead throughout the contest taking a 15-9 lead into the half. In the 4th quarter Canyon got hot and took a one point lead, but that would not hold up for long. Smart ball handling and great passing proved to much for Canyon, and eventually Hudson RIce k
nocked down a 3 point shot with 2 minutes left to retake the lead which would not be lost from that point on. The final score was 31-28 Unicorns.
The B team took a slightly different approach versus Briesemiester. Leaving nothing to chance the Unicorns scored 22 straight points before allowing a single basket, making the halftime score 28-6. They never backed off and continued to dominate the game leading to a final score of 54-10. Their second game against Canyon was not quite as high scoring yet the Unicorns still pulled out the win. The game was a defensive battle but the Unicorns never lost control of the action getting several steals and holding Canyon scoreless in the 4th quarter to finish with a 22-13 victory.
Come watch the 7th grade basketball team at home on Thursday night take on Smithson Valley.
